Located in between Athens and Atlanta, Monroe was founded in 1818 as a seat of Walton County. (The county was named after George Walton, one of the three Georgians who signed the Declaration of Independence). It was then incorporated as a town in 1821 and then ultimately as a city in 1896. The current population is just over 13,500 and was the premier cotton-producing city in the state of Georgia in the 1900s. There were two main cotton mills that were the main economic sources for the city, but they are no longer in operation and were converted into an antique mall (The Monroe Cotton Mills) and an event venue (The Engine Room)Request Appointment
